About Us
DAEMON: the guardian spirit of a person or place.DOPPELGANGER: the ghostly duplicate of a living person.
Now in it's 11th year, and with contemporary "terracotta army" of about forty thousand figures faces and fantastic images made to date at a variety of festivals throughout the U.K. and Europe, the workshops continue to astonish and delight wherever they go.
An unusual mixture of participatory workshop and exhibition, the
project creates a unique record of any event, big or small. We can
photograph self-portraits digitally and these can then be included on
festival websites - see our Gallery
Suitable for all ages and abilities, it is a great opportunity to get your hands dirty and surprise yourself. The main aim of the workshops is enjoyment and a chance to play freely
with the possibilities of self-expression: allowing the imagination to
take over.
A festival atmosphere is great for experimentation and enjoying the benefits of letting go.
“Thank you for taking part and bringing your fantastic ideas and creativity to marvellous muddy Larmer Tree 2009!”
“I just wanted to thank you and your team for coming along to both
the Play Day and the Finale Concert. It was excellent having you at both
events. I hope we can work together again next year.' Salisbury
International Festival 2009.
“A really big THANKYOU for your contribution to The Green at the
festival this year. You helped to make the festival a big success...”
Wychwood Festival 2009.
Sally Churchward on “ThisisHampshire.net” blog from Bestival: “We are
having the most festival fun ever! The side show of the event has to be
the “Daemon or Doppelganger” clay self-portrait workshop. We have just
re-created mini versions of our mermaid fancy dress costumes and
stretched artistic muscles that have been dormant since schooldays. Our
hands are now filthy!”
Some of the places we have worked at so far include:
Glastonbury
Bestival, Isle of Wight
Camp Bestival
Belfast Maritime Festival
Solfest
EXIT Festival, Serbia
The Larmer Tree
Roskilde Festival, Denmark
We are very flexible and can work with you to fit in with your plans: see Special Projects page."
"No 1 in the Top5 alternative Glastonbury experiences! (Undercover Magazine)
The workshops were inspired by Antony Gormley (the maker of the Angel
of the North) and his "Field" projects. We are aiming to provide
individuals with a chance to make a statement about what makes each one
of us unique in this crowded world. In a festival where we may be part
of a crowd of thousands, united in a common experience as an audience,
we each have our own story.
It is increasingly important to give voice to this individuality in a
society where we look to strangers as role models and are under immense
pressure to conform to idealised media images.
The workshops can give a meditative moment of therapeutic calm during a busy festival programme.
Primarily they are great fun, and a good chance for families and friends
to work side by side, without pressure, to create something tangible as
a memento of the day.
The results can be taken home at the end of the day, or be left to
join the touring "terracotta army" (we bring a small exhibition to each
event). We can take the figures away to be fired once dry, and they are
stored until the following year (or local potters are welcome to arrange
firings so figures can be left with the event).
